Kargil, March 20, 2025: On Day 1 of the World Forestry Day celebrations, GDC Drass, in collaboration with Kargil Forest Division and Pollution Control Committee Kargil today organized an insightful and engaging event to raise awareness about the critical relationship between forests and food security. The theme for this year’s event was “Forests and Food.”
The event was moderated by Dr. Imtiyaz Hussain, Assistant Professor of Botany, and Shujat Ali Mir, Assistant Professor of Commerce Department, with the patronage of Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, Principal GDC Drass.
The event was graced by the presence of the chief guest, Mohd. Ali, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kargil, who highlighted the essential role forests play in maintaining ecological balance, securing food resources, and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
In his speech, he emphasized the importance of student participation in environmental awareness campaigns, urging them to become ambassadors for sustainable practices in their communities.
As part of the event, a speech competition was held where six enthusiastic students participated, shedding light on the alarming impact of global warming on the Ladakh Union Territory, especially in the Drass region. The students passionately discussed the region’s vulnerability to climate change and the crucial role of forest conservation in combating the ongoing environmental challenges.
Additionally, a drawing competition was organized in parallel, with 20 students showcasing their artistic talents while expressing their thoughts on the theme of “Forests and Food” through creative drawings.
In the end, Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi addressed the audience, emphasizing the significant role of students in safeguarding the environment. He highlighted how awareness campaigns such as these help foster a deeper understanding of the critical environmental issues faced by the Ladakh UT and the Drass region. He urged the students to take active steps in contributing to the protection of local ecosystems and promoting sustainable practices for the future.
The event was an enriching and educational experience, drawing attention to the pressing need to preserve forests as a vital resource for food security, environmental stability, and combating climate change.
The celebrations will continue throughout the week with more events planned to further raise awareness and engage the local community in environmental preservation efforts.
