CEC Kargil attends Veer Gatha event commemorating historic capture of Shergui La.
Kargil, Dec 15, 2024: Chairman/Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC, Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffer Akhoon today attended Veer Gatha event commemorating the historic capture of Sherqui La, a strategic mountain pass, during the India-Pak War of 1971.
The event was organized at Government High Secondary School Silmoo to honor the valor of soldiers and contributions of civilians during the war.
Brigadier Ragudeep Minhaz, Sena Medal, Commander 192 Mountain Brigade; Commanding Officer 21 Gadwal Rifles, Col. AK Malitha; ex-serviceman Tsering Stobdan; soldiers; villagers; schoolchildren and other dignitaries attended the event.
In his address, Dr. Akhoon paid heartfelt tributes to the soldiers, expressing gratitude for their sacrifices and dedication. He emphasized the importance of being proud of the nation, its democracy, and its soldiers who safeguard the borders.
“We live in a garden of diverse flowers, united under one democracy,” he said. He appreciated the Army’s Sadbhavana initiatives and the efforts in running schools for the welfare of the community.
The CEC also recalled the sacrifices made during the Kargil War of 1999 and other conflicts, highlighted the invaluable role of the civilian population in supporting the armed forces. He lauded the Indian Air Force for its commendable airlift services during harsh winters and praised the Army for organizing the event despite the severe cold. On behalf of the people of Kargil, he assured continued support to the armed forces in every situation.
Ex-serviceman Tsering Stobdan shared the inspiring story of the successful capture of Point 13,620 at Sherqui La.
Vice Principal of Government High School Silmoo also addressed the gathering, appreciating the sacrifices of soldiers and the enduring bond between Army and the local population.
Villager Sharchey, Arif Ladakhi recounted the contributions of locals during the war, recalling how they carried supplies, provided logistical support, and assisted the Army during difficult times.
During the event cultural performances were presented by students. Certificates and mementos were distributed to the students and participants, with special felicitations for the locals who played a pivotal role during the war.
Nambardar Ghulam Mohd delivered vote of thanks and expressed gratitude to all who contributed to making the event successful.
