    Forest Dept and LPCC celebrates Int’l Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer

    Leh, Sept 17: Department of Forest, Environment and Ecology and Ladakh Pollution Control Committee (LPCC), UT Ladakh celebrated International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer on Friday in presence of the chief guest Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Jigmet Takpa and Regional Director, LPCC, Aditya Madanpotra.
    To commemorate the day an awareness event was organized involving the school students of Islamia Public School, Leh.
    A total of 250 students participated in the event where drawing and elocution competition were organised on the theme ‘Importance of Ozone layer’ and related environmental concerns like global warming.
    Speaking on the occasion, the chief guest, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Jigmet Takpa briefed the students about the importance of ozone layer, causes of its depletion and ways to protect it.
    The Principal, Islamia Public School, Leh, highlighted the role of ozone layer in ensuring survival of humanity. In her concluding remarks, she emphasised that ways should be explored to minimize the release of Ozone Depleting Substances in the atmosphere.
    Later, the chief guest distributed prizes among the winners of the elocution competition. While, Regional Director, LPCC distributed prizes to the winners for the drawing competition.
    In 1994, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 16th September as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, commemorating the date of the signing, in 1987, of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer (resolution 49/114).
    The theme for the 2022 International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is Montreal Protocol@35: global cooperation protecting life on earth.
    The theme recognises the wider impact the Montreal Protocol has on climate change and the need to act in collaboration, forge partnerships and develop global cooperation to address climate challenges and protect life on earth for future generations.
