GDC Drass conducts departmental lab and library visits under PMUSHA Bridge Course.
Kargil, April 26, 2025: As part of the ongoing PMUSHA Bridge Course Program, Govt. Degree College (GDC) Drass successfully organized a series of structured orientation visits for newly admitted students on April 25.
The initiative aimed to familiarize students with the college’s academic infrastructure, particularly its laboratories and library, and to build a foundation for experiential learning.
The day began with a Library Orientation Session conducted by Farida Banoo, College Librarian. Students were introduced to various sections of the college library, including textbooks, reference books, fiction/non-fiction collections, competitive examination materials, and a dedicated Ladakhi Section.
Farida explained the purpose of each section, the importance of physical books, and how to use digital platforms such as NDLI (National Digital Library of India) and ONOS for academic enhancement. The session was interactive and motivated students to develop consistent reading habits.
Students then proceeded to the Physics Laboratory, where Rizwan Ali, Assistant Professor of Physics, delivered an engaging presentation on laboratory equipment and their role in understanding fundamental scientific principles.
Key instruments such as the multimeter, ammeter, and voltmeter were demonstrated, and their practical applications were explained. He also introduced students to scientific programming tools like Scilab and Python, emphasizing their relevance in modern experimental physics, simulations, and data analysis.
The tour continued to the Food Processing Laboratory, where Er. Mir Ishfaq Ahmad, Instructor in Food Processing, guided students through the Pickle Processing Unit. He provided a comprehensive overview of the Pickle Making Technician skill course offered at the college and discussed its potential for entrepreneurship, particularly in the cold climate of Drass.
Students enjoyed a live demonstration of pickle preparation during the visit, along with an explanation and demonstration of each pickle-making equipment present in the lab, offering them a hands-on understanding of food preservation techniques and the local business potential in this sector.
In the Chemistry Laboratory, Manzoor Hussain, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, welcomed the students and familiarized them with basic chemical techniques and safety protocols. He introduced the lab team Dr. Shalini Shashni, Assistant Professor, and Shahid Ali Hadi, Lab Attendant, before giving a walkthrough of essential equipment like the water bath, refractometer, pH meter and various glassware.
Students were shown analytical tools and learned about chemistry’s interdisciplinary relevance in fields like medicine, environmental science, and industry. Mr. Manzoor encouraged students to explore career opportunities in chemical research and applications.
The students also visited the Zoology Laboratory, where Dr. Talib Hussain, Assistant Professor, showcased preserved specimens, anatomical models, and biological tools used in zoological studies. The session gave students practical exposure to the field and stimulated interest in animal sciences and biodiversity research.
Dr. Imtiyaz Hussain, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Botany, led a comprehensive demonstration of the lab’s equipment and specimens. Dr. Mohd. Shahnawaz, Assistant Professor, discussed the research projects undertaken by B.Sc. IV Semester students, offering a glimpse into the academic and research potential within the department. Students shared positive feedback, appreciating the engaging and informative experience.
The entire session was coordinated by Suhail Ahmad Bhat, High Altitude Trekking Guide Instructor, GDC Drass, ensuring smooth execution and impactful delivery of the programme.
