GDC Kargil celebrates International Women’s Day.

Kargil, March 08, 2025: Government Degree College Kargil today celebrated International Women’s day with enthusiasm and collective commitment to “Accelerate Action for Gender Equality” as this year’s theme.
The program was organized by GDC Kargil’s Gender Sensitization Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority Kargil Ladakh. More than 300 students participated in this program in college Seminar Hall.
Advocate Mohammad Iqbal from District Legal Services Authority Kargil was the chief guest and College Principal, Prof. Disket Angmo graced the occasion as guest of honor.
In her keynote address, Principal Prof. Disket Angmo said, this day marks not just a celebration but also a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience and contribution of women across the globe.
She termed the day as an occasion to acknowledge the strides women have made, the challenges they face and the collective responsibility women share in accelerating progress towards gender equality.
Prof. Angmo reiterated that gender doesn’t define one’s limits but amplifies their possibilities. Her important message to share on this occasion embodied the theme of the occasion, i.e: “Never say, Can I? “, “Always say, I can.”
The principal expressed her happiness over the presence of the huge gathering, adding that such an enthralling presence reflects a shared commitment to a world where every woman and girl has the opportunity to dream, achieve and lead.
Advocate Mohammad Iqbal from DLSA Kargil gave a detailed presentation on “Women Rights and Laws related to women” and extended an enlightening interaction on the legal provisions under which women can claim for their rights according to the law of the land.
He explained the key legal provisions and remedies such as criminal laws for women (IPC & CRPC), Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956 and Human Trafficking Laws and the laws against domestic violence.
He said India has a strong legal framework for women’s protection and emphasised on the need to spread mass awareness regarding these laws in the larger interest.
Students asked questions during the session and the speaker gave satisfactory answers, which helped a greater extent to make this program successful.
A poetry recitation session was also conducted during the proceedings in which 12 students from different semesters participated. The participant students presented enthralling poems in English, Persian, Urdu and Ladakhi Language on the theme “Women and the Society”.
Head Department of Education, Kaneez Fatima presented a beautiful Purgi poem as a tribute to the struggles and hardships faced by mothers for upbringing of human generations across the world. Nasir Ud Din Khafi, Assistant Professor English, spoke about the Status of Women in Islam and other Religions.
An inspiring Hindi movie, “Shunni Batey Sunnata” was also screened in the afternoon session which had a great impact on the audience regarding the struggles and hardships women face in upbringing children despite odds.
Head Department of English, Hakeema Banoo presented vote of thanks on behalf of the organising team to all the guests and participants for making the event successful.
Certificates of excellence and consolation were distributed among the participant students and girl achievers in different categories at local and national levels. The program ended with a pledge to accelerate action for gender equality.
