GDC Kargil concludes 4-day educational tour to industry, research institutes of Kashmir.
Kargil, October 31, 2024: Department of Biotechnology and Biochemistry, GDC Kargil conducts industry and research exposure tour for the students of 3rd and 5th Semesters to Kashmir division of J&K UT.
On the first day, the students visited ICAR-Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture (CITH) and interacted with the director of the institute and then with various scientists from different branches that include plant pathology, soil sciences, entomology and plant biotechnology. Later the students visited research fields and learned about advanced cultivation practices for growing fruits and vegetables in temperate climates.
On the second day, the students visited SIDCO Industrial Area Lassipora where they were first briefed about start-ups and ventures by the Chairman and General Secretary of the association.
They stressed the need to start businesses by using local products. The students were then taken to apple grading and cold storage units and then visited units like milk processing, water packaging etc.
On the third day, the students visited Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM) Branch Srinagar. At first the students visited plant biotechnology lab and were briefed about aromatic and medicinal plants.
Then it was followed by visit to cancer pharmacology lab where the students were briefed about tumor and drug designing against tumour cells. Further, the students visited Natural Product Chemistry Lab and then Microbial Technology Lab where they were briefed about isolation of active natural product compounds.
The students were accompanied by Mohd Raza, Assistant Professor Biotechnology and Dr Mehmood Ali, Assistant Professor Biochemistry and Sidiqa Banoo, Lab Assistant.
The tour was organized as an initiative through DBT Star College Scheme, supported by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Further, the organizing departments thanked Prof. Disket Angmo for the cooperation and support for the exposure tour.
