GDC Kargil conducts field tour to Suru Valley.
Kargil, October 25, 2024: The Department of Environmental Science at GDC Kargil organized a practical field tour to Suru Valley, attended by students from the 1st, 3rd, and 5th semesters.
The tour was aimed to provide hands-on experience to enhance students’ understanding of ecological diversity and environmental science concepts during this practical trip.
Teachers guided the students through the bio-resources of Suru Valley, showcasing unique plant species found at Damsna and along the route. Similarly, they highlighted aspects of freshwater ecosystems, pointing out various phytoplankton and macrophytes present in the Damsna region.
In addition to enhancing their academic knowledge, the students had the opportunity to observe and engage with natural habitats and environmental processes first hand. This experience allowed them to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world examples, fostering a deeper appreciation for environmental conservation.
During this educational tour, the students were shown and discussed the various pros and cons of highway construction from Kargil to Zanskar. The benefits highlighted included improved road connectivity, increased tourism inflow and a reduction in accidents.
The discussion also covered potential drawbacks, such as deforestation due to tree removal along the roads, the loss of agricultural land, demolition of houses and disturbances to wildlife due to increased vehicle movement.
Examples were provided wherever possible to enhance understanding of these impacts. This balanced perspective provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the environmental and socio-economic effects of infrastructure development.
Head Department of EVS, Dr. Abdul Hamid and faculty member Dr. Stanzin Namtak, along with Laboratory Assistant Ahmed Ali, accompanied the students throughout this field trip.
