The trip was conducted to assess satisfaction with life among rural population through structured questionnaire and interview.
The main objective of this field trip was to provide students with hands-on experience in survey-based research and data collection methods in psychology. Students were tasked with conducting a survey to assess the satisfaction with life among rural residents in two villages near Panikhar.
This fieldwork aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, enhancing students’ understanding of research design, survey methodology, and the dynamics of rural populations’ psychological well-being.
The students were accompanied by Dr Suhana Syed Burhan and Mr Mohd Mustafa, assistant professors in the psychology department, and Stanzin Angmo, Lab assistant.
Faculty member, Mohd Mustafa held an orientation session with all participating students before commencement of the trip. He explained the significance of assessing life satisfaction, particularly in rural areas where socioeconomic and environmental factors can vary significantly compared to urban settings. He introduced the students to the structured questionnaire they would be using. Students were briefed on how to approach residents respectfully, explain the purpose of the survey, and ensure confidentiality and comfort for all participants.
Upon arrival, students were split into smaller teams to cover different sections of each village effectively. Each team was supervised to ensure consistency and reliability in data collection. Each student interacted with participants individually, explaining the purpose of the survey in the local language to foster understanding and engagement.
They then asked the questions as per the structured questionnaire, recording responses accurately and neutrally.
This field trip was a valuable learning experience for students, providing practical skills in survey research and field-based psychological assessment. The collected data will be compiled, analyzed, and used to explore patterns of life satisfaction among rural residents, contributing to the students’ understanding of rural psychology and community well-being.
