Ladakh: The newly created Union territory with geographical area of about 59,146 Km2 and population of about 274,289 in an altitude of about 2550m to 7742m.
Public Works (R&B) Department: Public Works (R&B) Department is responsible for construction, maintenance, and planning of roads, bridges, and Government building. In view of strategic location of Ladakh bordering China & Pakistan, the responsibility of PW (R&B) becomes of much more attentive from defense point of view. Similarly for local populace, the importance is enhanced due to tourist importance places like Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Leh place, Guruduwara Pathar Sahib, Spiti Valley, Hunderman Village, Rangdum Monastery, Cave Monastery and so many other important places.
Specifications
The various road works are carried out as per MORTH / MORD / IRC / I.S. Specifications and Standards. In some cases the circulars issued by Chief Engineer PWD are also followed. In specific cases Specification and or good practices adopted elsewhere in the world are also referred to be adopted.
Having a border with china, some portion of roads in Ladakh is also being maintained by Border Road Organization.
