Kargil, October 26, 2024: As part of the Gender Sensitization Curriculum in Sociology, the Sociology Department of Sankoo Campus, GDC Kargil under the supervision of Nodal Officer Sankoo Campus Dr Saleem Ahmad, hosted a movie screening at Pre Fab Smart Hall.
On the occasion, India’s official submission for the 2025 Academy Award, “Laapataa Ladies,” was screened. The film explored several gender-related subtleties, including intersectionality, women’s agency, the patriarchal system, gender stereotypes, and cultural expectations of gender roles.
Dr Imtiyaz Ali Kharpa, Assistant Professor of Sociology formally addressed the program by sharing insight into gender society’s structure and its operation, together with the ensuing problem of female dependence, male dominance, and dowry. He also emphasized the importance of viewing the movie as a reflection of society, which encouraged the students to relate it to issues in their communities.
The movie screening saw active participation from the students and faculty members from other departments also graced the occasion by attending the events. Students from all semesters were full in attendance and showed their curiosity and excitement throughout the session.
Following the screening of the movie, students and faculty members, Tsering Angmo and Dr Imtiyaz Ali kharpa, Department of Sociology, participated in the interactive session and examined the fundamental concept of gender by inter-relating it with scenes from the movie. Finally, the vote of thanks was presented by Tsering Angmo underscoring the importance of film as a tool for understanding of the gender concept.
