    Sankoo Campus, GDC Kargil observes International Women’s Day.

    Kargil, March 08, 2025: The Department of English, Sankoo Campus, Govt. Degree College Kargil today observed International Women’s Day with the theme “For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” in Prefab Hall, Science Block.
    In the light of the general theme, the Department of English organized a program on the topic, ‘Development of Women Writers in English Literature.’
    The event commenced with a welcome note followed by an introductory speech by Dr. Azra Khatoon, Head of the Department, English, on the historical and literary significance of International Women’s Day. She highlighted the importance of women rights, equality and empowerment, with special reference to the women literary figures in the global realm, such as Aphra Behn, Jane Austen, Toni Morrison, Mary Wollstonecraft, Agatha Christie, J.K. Rowling among others.
    She also encouraged the girl students to actively participate in the literary, cultural and political domains and become instrument in bringing the right kind of changes within the society. The talk was followed by the screening of a small documentary on ‘Female Authors who made History.’
    Padma Wangmo, Assistant Professor, Department of English, delivered the concluding speech, which focused on the contributions made by the Indian women writers in English Literature in Indian milieu, such as Arundhati Roy, Anita Desai, Kiran Desai, Jhumpa Lahiri and Mahasweta Devi. She further presented the vote of thanks to the participants.
    The program ended with an enlightening interactive session with the students. Female faculty members of the campus and a total of 70 students participated in the program.
