134 kgs of unhygienic, expired meat seized in Zanskar, legal action initiated.
Kargil, November 21, 2024: On the direction of Sub Divisional Magistrate, Zanskar, Food Safety Officer Kargil, in a crackdown on food safety violations today seized 134.700 kgs of expired and unhygienic beef and 6.500 kg of mutton sticks during an investigation in Padum, Zanskar.
The meat, found in the sealed butcher shops, was non-labelled and failed to meet basic safety standards.
The inspection, which stemmed from a surprise market raid on November 19, 2024, led by Tehsildar Zanskar, Mohd Hassan, and SHO Zanskar, Inspector Gyalson, exposed grave violations under Sections 27(2)(C) and 27(3)(A) of the Food Safety and Standards Act. Legal action is being taken against the shop owners for their negligence.
Further, random inspections of 25 other shops dealing in essential commodities were conducted, with multiple product samples collected for testing. Authorities aim to ensure compliance with food safety regulations across the region.
This swift action highlights the administration’s commitment to safeguarding public health. The authorities have warned vendors to adhere strictly to food safety norms, assuring strict penalties for violations.
