Kargil, July 11, 2024: National Academy of Sciences, India, Jammu Chapter in collaboration with GDC Drass today organized a panel discussion on “Sustainable Development in Ladakh: Prospects and Challenges” at Conference Hall Baroo.
Chairman/CEC, LAHDC, Kargil, Dr Mohd Jaffer Akhoon was the chief guest besides, Executive Councilor, PHE/Tourism, Kacho Mohd Feroz; Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil, Shrikant Suse; Councillor, Saliskote Mohd Sajjad; CPO Abdul Hadi; Fellow National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Rabindranath Nath Gohil; Principal GDC Drass, Dr Amjad Abassi besides academicians from various colleges and stakeholders were present during the panel discussion.
Addressing the discussion, the CEC said limited opportunities in government jobs sustainable livelihood and youth should explore entrepreneurship opportunities.
He added that the Council is working on a document titled vision document 2047, and for that suggestions will be sought from the civil society and stakeholders in general.
Pertaining to urban development, the CEC said collaborative efforts need to be done to achieve sustainable development and many initiatives are being undertaken for it.
EC Kacho Mohd Feroz said that sustainable practices needs to be taken care of in the field of Tourism, Agriculture, Horticulture, Fisheries and other allied sectors. He added that Kargil has potential to take tourism ahead while keeping the ecological safeguards and protecting the environment.
At the event, DC Shrikant Suse emphasized the importance of development while protecting bio-resources. He highlighted various initiatives taken by the district administration under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) and the achievements of Self-Help Group (SHG) workers in Saliskote. He also added that self-entrepreneurship should be promoted.
Earlier, Fellow National Academy of Sciences, Prof. Rabindranath Gohil presented a welcome address and said the academy thinks that science should reach at grass root level and efforts of scientists should impact the common people.
The programme was followed with a Focus Group Discussions amongst various stakeholders including academicians, district officers and civil society members on the theme.
