Workshop on sustainable building practices held at GMDC Zanskar.
Kargil, Sept 02, 2024: Students of Govt. Model Degree College Zanskar attended an enlightening workshop on sustainable building practices organized by Pema Care in collaboration with Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL).
The event brought together renowned architects and engineers, providing an unparalleled learning experience aimed at empowering students with skills to build sustainable, eco-friendly structures using locally available materials.
The workshop, a blend of theory and hands-on training, covered critical aspects of sustainable construction, focusing on the use of local resources to reduce environmental impact.
Students were introduced to the fundamentals of soil chemistry, learning the intricate process of transforming raw earth into durable bricks—an essential skill for anyone interested in sustainable architecture.
Participants engaged in practical sessions where they learned to make bricks, gaining insights into traditional and modern techniques that blend the rich heritage of Zanskar with cutting-edge sustainable practices.
This hands-on approach allowed students to connect directly with the materials and methods, fostering a deeper understanding of sustainable building principles.
Renowned architects and engineers guided the students through each step, sharing their knowledge on the importance of building with earth and other locally sourced materials.
“Learning to construct with what’s around us not only preserves our environment but also our culture,” said Acho Dorje, one of the experts from HIAL.
“These students are the future of sustainable living in the Himalayas, and today they have taken their first step,” said Yashwant Negi from HIAL.
The workshop also emphasized the importance of integrating sustainability into education, equipping young minds with skills that can be applied in real-world scenarios. The students were enthusiastic about the hands-on experience, expressing excitement about implementing these techniques in their future projects.
Pema Care and HIAL’s collaborative effort highlights the growing need for environmentally responsible construction, especially in sensitive ecological regions like Zanskar. By equipping students with the skills to build sustainably, the workshop aims to inspire a new generation of architects, engineers, and builders who are committed to preserving the environment while embracing innovation.
