EJM College Leh in collaboration with National Institute of Hydrology Western Himalaya Regional Centre organized an Awareness Program.
Leh, October 11, 2024: Eliezer Joldan Memorial College Leh in collaboration with National Institute of Hydrology Western Himalaya Regional Centre organized an Awareness Program on the theme ‘Science and Society for Cryosphere’ at EJM college Leh on October 11 2024.
The event was organized by Department of Geography, Geology and Environmental Sciences. Prof. Tashi Ldawa, Director College Affairs, University of Ladakh graced the event as the chief guest. Dr. Sameena Iqbal, Principal EJM College welcomed the chief guest and resource persons from the National Institute of Hydrology- Western Himalaya Regional Centre, Jammu with traditional Khataks.
In his address Professor Ldawa emphasized the identification of problems related to cryosphere in Ladakh in the wake of climate change. He urged the students to understand the significance of glaciers, permafrost and snow cover as the single source of water in Ladakh.
Dr. P G Jose, Head, Western Himalayan Regional Centre, NIH presented a talk on the topic, ‘Role of cryosphere in sustaining surface water flows in Upper Indus Basin.’ He highlighted the role of snow cover, glaciers, permafrost and rainfall on the river flows and implications of depleting cryosphere. More specifically, he talked about the significant role of Phuche Glacier above Gangles, and Khardung glaciers, their mass balance, retreating rate and seasonal variation.
Dr. Riyaz Ahmad Mir, scientist C at NIH talked on ‘Hydrological Significance of Glacier in Ladakh: Challenges and Concerns.’ He described the fundamental dynamics of glaciers and highlighted the implications of climate change and related disaster like glacial lake outburst flood (GLOFs) in Ladakh. He also presented his study on glacial area change in Ladakh between 1962 to 2023.The talk was followed by question-and-answer session. Around 300 students participated in the event along with faculty members.
The event was hosted by Dr. Roohi Irshaad, Assistant Professor, Department of Geology and Ms. Shabnam Shaheen, Assistant Professor, Department of Geology presented the vote of thanks.
