Kargil, April 04, 2025: As per the directions of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Zanskar, Romil Singh Donk, a surprise market checking was carried out today in the main market of Padum by Tehsildar Zanskar, Mohd Hassan, accompanied by SHO Zanskar, Gyaltson, along with other committee members including a doctor from the BMO Office and Tehsil Supply Officer Zanskar.
The market check aimed to curb malpractices such as overpricing, hoarding, non-display of rate lists, and the sale of rotten and sub-standard items. During the inspection, it was observed that a majority of shopkeepers had closed their shops upon learning of the market checking, raising concerns about transparency in trade practices. Despite this, several shops were thoroughly inspected by the committee.
Various violations were found, including the sale of expired goods, overpricing, and hoarding of essential commodities. A substantial quantity of expired products was seized and destroyed on the spot in a pit dug with the help of a JCB provided by Mechanical Department under the supervision of Tehsildar and SHO Zanskar.
Shopkeepers were strictly instructed to maintain cleanliness, refrain from selling expired or sub-standard goods, and prominently display the approved rate lists of all items in their shops.
The administration has taken serious note of these violations and warned that strict legal action will be initiated against defaulters. Routine market inspections will continue to ensure fair trade practices and the protection of consumer rights.
The general public is also urged to remain vigilant and report any cases of overpricing, hoarding, or sale of substandard items to the concerned authorities.
