Kargil, April 22, 2025: The Earth Day was celebrated at Government Degree College Drass was marked with enthusiasm and active participation from both students and faculty members. The event aimed to raise awareness about environmental conservation, with this year’s theme being “Geology and Nature.”
The program commenced with a welcome note and a brief introduction to the theme, highlighting the vital role of geology in understanding Earth’s natural systems and the importance of preserving the planet’s rich natural resources.
A total of 20 students participated in the speech and drawing competitions, which served as the main highlights of the event. In the speech competition, students expressed their thoughts on Earth, sustainability, and the geological dynamics that shape our environment.
Prof. Parveen Fatima, Department of English and Tsering Lazes, Department of Geology, served as the judges, evaluating participants based on content, clarity, and thematic relevance.
Simultaneously, drawing competition provided a platform for students to artistically depict their understanding of “Geology and Nature.” The judging panel included Dr. Talib Hussain, Department of Zoology, Dr. Ajaz Ahmad Lone, Department of Urdu, and Dr. Shoib Maqbool, Department of Geology, who evaluated the entries based on originality, creativity, and alignment with the theme.
Additionally, a geological quiz competition was conducted featuring two teams – Team A and Team B. The quiz tested participants’ knowledge of geological concepts, earth processes, and the environment. Team A led by Aanyat Ali of the 6th Semester, demonstrated excellent performance and emerged as the winner of the quiz.
Shugufta Parveen (6th Semester) secured First Position in the Speech Competition. She also won First Prize in the Drawing Competition, demonstrating exceptional talent in both categories.
The event was supervised by Dr. Amjad Ali Abbasi, Principal of GDC Drass. During his address he emphasized the importance of taking meaningful steps to protect and preserve planet earth.
He highlighted how collective efforts, environmental awareness, and scientific understanding are crucial in tackling global environmental challenges. He distributed awards among top performers of each segment of program, recognizing their outstanding contributions.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Shoib Maqbool, Assistant Professor, Department of Geology. The celebration concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Shoib Maqbool, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the worthy Principal for his continued support and guidance.
