The Department of Sheep Husbandry, in collaboration with the Central Wool Development Board (CWDB), proudly hosted the inauguration of EKTA – Exhibition cum Knowledge Sharing for Textile Advantage today at Eco Park, Leh. The event served as a vibrant platform for promoting and strengthening Ladakh’s textile and wool sectors, especially the world-renowned Pashmina industry.
Dr. Mohmed Jafar, Chief Executive Councillor, Kargil, graced the event as the Chief Guest. He was joined by several esteemed dignitaries including Sh. Tashi Namgyal Yakzee, Executive Councillor, Leh, Madam Padmini, IAS, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, Sh. G.S. Bhatia, Executive Director, Central Wool Development Board, Dr Iftikhar Hussain Director Sheep Husbandry UT Ladakh, Dr. Tsewang Morup, District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Leh, Dr. Nyaz ul Hussain, District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Kargil, as well as officials from CWDB, textile entrepreneurs, Pashmina and wool artisans, department staff, tourists, and nomadic families from Changthang.
Highlights of the Event:
Chief Executive Councillor Dr. Mohmed Jafar lauded the initiative and emphasized the need for financial honorariums for shepherds and support for the implementation of silk industry initiatives in Ladakh.
Executive Councillor Sh. Tashi Namgyal Yakzee called for the extension of more welfare schemes targeted at the nomadic communities of Changthang, recognizing their critical role in preserving traditional Pashmina rearing practices.
Executive Director CWDB, Sh. G.S. Bhatia, extended a heartfelt vote of thanks to all participants and appreciated the enthusiastic cooperation from the Sheep Husbandry Department in making the event a success.
Dignitaries and guests visited 40 stalls showcasing the richness of Ladakh’s textile industry, featuring Pashmina products, wool-based enterprises, and innovative technologies. The event offered a significant networking opportunity for local entrepreneurs, artisans, and policymakers.
The day concluded with a special visit by Joint Secretary (Textiles) Madam Padmini, IAS, to the Dehairing Plant in Leh, reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening value-addition infrastructure in the region.
