Key Review Meeting of NDMA held in Kargil to Strengthen Disaster Preparedness Mechanisms.
Kargil, July 18, 2025: Pursuant to the Kargil visit of a team from National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), New Delhi, a crucial meeting was held today at the Conference Hall in Baroo on various issues related to disaster management.
The NDMA team comprising Lieutenant Colonel Sanjeev Kumar Shahi, Joint Advisor (Ops), and Ranjan Kumar Bora, Senior Consultant, International Cooperation, CBT Division, NDMA, was welcomed by Additional Deputy Commissioner/Chief Executive Officer, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kargil, Imteeaz Kacho in presence of District Officers.
The meeting was attended by the Additional Deputy Commissioner/CEO, DDMA; Lieutenant Colonel Sanjeev Kumar Shahi; Ranjan Kumar Bora; Chief Medical Officer; Assistant Commissioner (Revenue); Executive Engineer, PHE; Headquarter Assistant to DC/ District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO); SDM, Shakar-Chiktan; Assistant Director, Food & Civil Supplies; Chief Horticulture Officer; Executive Engineer, Irrigation & Flood Control; Tehsildar, Kargil; Chief Agriculture Officer and other concerned officials.
The interactive session focused on reviewing and strengthening disaster preparedness and response mechanisms in the district.
During the meeting, a detailed discussion took place on the disaster vulnerabilities of Kargil District in light of its unique topography and climatic conditions.
HQA/DDMO Kaneez Fatima delivered an extensive presentation covering various aspects of disaster preparedness. Key topics included the use of the SACHET App for early warning SMS alerts, Hazard Vulnerability Risk Assessment (HVRA); Community-Based Disaster Management (CBDM), establishment of Village Disaster Management Committees (VDMCs), conducting night mock drills and the availability of megaphones, sirens and Emergency Operation Centres (EOCs).
The NDMA team shared vital insights on existing disaster-related schemes, funding provisions and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The team also evaluated the current performance and functioning of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) and District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). Further, the composition of DDMA-Kargil, its heirarchies as well as roles and responsibilities.
A thorough review of updated data, SOPs and the District Disaster Management Plan (DDMP) was also carried out during the meeting. The fact that Kargil was successful in conducting night-time mock drill was appreciated by the visiting team.
This initiative reflects a proactive step toward enhancing disaster resilience and coordination among stakeholders in District Kargil.
