Leh, August 4, 2025: The Animal Husbandry Department, Leh organized a program at CAHO-Leh Office complex to distribute “Nomadic kit” under council subsidy for the year 2024-25.
The nomadic kits were distributed under the august hands of Sh. Tsering Angchok Hon’ble Deputy Chairman LAHDC-Leh, Sh. Tashi Namgyal Yakzee, Hon’ble Executive Councilor (Animal/Sheep Husbandry) LAHDC-Leh, Shri Kunzang Lotus, Hon’ble Councillor Hunder Constituency, Dr. Mohd Ismail Director, Animal/Sheep Husbandry and Fisheries Departments UT Ladakh, and Dr. Stanzin Rabgais Chief Animal Husbandry officer-Leh.
Under the scheme, nomadic kits-comprising tents, tarpaulins, torches, milk churner sets, machines, batteries, inverters, and solar panels-were distributed at a 75% subsidy. This initiative, now in its second year, is part of department’s ongoing efforts to incentivize yak herders outside the Changthang subdivision to adopt and sustain yak rearing and husbandry practices, thereby enhancing their livelihoods.
Yak husbandry holds immense significance for sustainable development in Ladakh, playing a pivotal role in the livelihoods, ecology, and cultural heritage of high-altitude communities. Yaks provide essential resources such as milk, butter, cheese, meat, wool, hides, and dung for fuel, making them indispensable to the region’s socio-economic and environmental framework.
