To celebrate the 5th year of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, the District Social & Tribal Welfare Department, in collaboration with the Child Welfare Society, organized an event in Leh. The programme was conducted under the leadership of the Director, Social & Tribal Welfare Department, Leh, Kunzes Angmo. Also present at the event were ADDC Sonam Nurboo (JKAS), Director Education Leh, Tashi Dolma, and ASP Rigzen Sangdup, along with officials from the District Social Welfare Office at the Conference Hall, DC Office, Leh.
A live telecast from Amritsar was streamed during the event, where the Chief Minister of Punjab and representatives from the Centre participated in the 5-year celebration of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan. The Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment organized this grand culmination event at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, on November 18.
The event in Leh began with a presentation by the District Social Welfare Officer on the DDAC Leh, highlighting its current status, progress, success stories, awareness activities, oath-taking ceremonies, nukkad nataks, and hotspot visits. He added that the center is highly functional and operates through coordination with the Ladakh Police and the Sonam Nurboo Memorial Hospital, Leh.
The Director, Social & Tribal Welfare Department, Leh, appealed to the students present there to take the pledge to avoid drugs and lead a healthy life, emphasizing the dangerous after-effects of drug abuse. She added that it has been three months since the awareness and pledge-taking campaign began and expressed hope that it will have a positive impact on the students.
Speaking at the event, the ADDC Leh mentioned that drug abuse and its consequences are extremely harmful. He expressed hope that this campaign will succeed in guiding the youth toward building better lives, ultimately contributing to a healthier society.
Director Education Leh emphasized that the seriousness of drug abuse in Ladakh cannot be denied. She stated that since the problem already exists, it must be addressed through awareness, and it is everyone’s duty to educate people about the side effects and seriousness of drug abuse in daily life. She added that timely action and collective attention are essential. She also mentioned that each student taking the pledge will become an ambassador for spreading awareness among their peers and expressed her hope to see Ladakh become a Nasha Mukt region.
ASP Leh spoke about the reasons behind drug issues, explaining that many cases stem from children coming from broken families or from situations where parents show minimal interest in their child’s welfare and whereabouts, making children more vulnerable to falling into drug abuse. He added that Ladakh’s location between the major tourism routes of Kashmir and Himachal makes drug networking and availability easier in the region.
A pledge-taking ceremony was held with students from Sindh Public School and Delhi Public School, Leh, along with officials and staff of the Social Welfare and Child Welfare Societies.
