    The Sheep Husbandry Department, Nubra, today organised an Awareness / Breeders’ Camp at Chulunkha village under the National Livestock Mission (NLM). The programme witnessed active participation from the villagers of Chulunkha.
    The event commenced with a welcome address by Shri Ghulam Mohd, Flock Inspector, who greeted all participants and highlighted the significance of such awareness camps in improving livestock management and strengthening rural livelihoods.
    Following this, Dr. Rauful Hassan, Incharge LDO Nubra, delivered a detailed lecture covering various departmental schemes, including the National Livestock Mission, Intensive Development Programme, and other initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable sheep and goat rearing. He elaborated on the economic and ecological benefits of small ruminant rearing, the role of sheep and goat manure in organic farming, and the nutritional and therapeutic benefits of goat milk.
    He further briefed the villagers about the advantages of forming a Farmers Producer Organisation (FPO), to which the participants responded positively and agreed to work towards its establishment. Dr. Hassan also discussed essential management practices such as neonatal care, feeding of pregnant animals, vaccination schedules, and routine dipping to maintain flock/hard health.
    As a resource person, Dr. Changchup Dorjay (Research Assistant at Pashmina Goat Farm Upshi) delivered an insightful lecture on the department’s ongoing efforts to revive livestock populations in non-traditional areas. He detailed the provision of livestock units at 75% subsidised rates, free distribution of elite rams and bucks for genetic improvement, and explained various credit support mechanisms, including the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) loan facility.
    The event concluded with an interactive session where villagers shared the challenges faced in livestock rearing. They requested to provide shearing machines, predator-proof corrals, open paddocks, livestock units, milk replacer powder for kids and lambs, and Rarzee.
    The department assured that the concerns raised would be examined and addressed under the relevant schemes.
