Deputy Commissioner Chairs DCDC Meeting to Strengthen Cooperative Sector in Kargil.
Kargil, January 30, 2026: The Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, who also serves as Chairman of the District Cooperative Development Committee (DCDC), chaired a meeting of the committee at his office chamber in Baroo to review progress and outline measures to strengthen the cooperative sector in the district.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Registrar Cooperatives Shahzad Sarwar, Chief Agriculture Officer Ashiq Hussain, District Sheep Husbandry Officer Niyazul Hassnain, and representatives from the departments of Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Food and Civil Supplies, and Fisheries. Officials from the Cooperative Bank, NABARD, FCI, NDDB, Milk Union, Fish Union, and other stakeholders were also present.
Deputy Registrar Cooperatives apprised the Deputy Commissioner of the action taken and progress achieved since the previous DCDC meeting held in February 2025.
Deliberations focused on the establishment and registration of Multi-Purpose District Cooperative Societies (M-DCS), Multi-Purpose Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (M-PACS), and Multi-Purpose Farmer Cooperative Societies (M-FCS). The meeting emphasised strengthening existing dairy cooperative societies and initiating new registrations in uncovered blocks, including Shargole, Pashkum, and Chiktan.
The committee also proposed registering cooperatives in additional sectors such as handicrafts, artisanal Pashmina, wool, poultry, meat, sheep, and animal husbandry to broaden the scope of cooperative activities and enhance benefits to farmers.
Measures to promote the use of organic fertilisers were discussed with support from departmental experts, SKUAST, and academic institutions. The Deputy Commissioner directed officials to develop tutorial videos for the effective and scientific use of fertilisers.
Other issues taken up included computerisation of PACS, revival of non-functional PACS, completion of data updation on the NCD portal, construction of a cooperative complex at Baroo, and campaigns to promote the cooperative movement.
The Deputy Commissioner stressed optimal utilisation of barren Kah-Charai land for fodder cultivation to increase cattle population and milk production. Strategies for milk collection through depots, processing into value-added products, and expanding depot functions to include collection of vegetables, fruits, and fish were also discussed.
Officials were directed to submit a comprehensive plan to maximise output from grazing lands and enhance farmers’ income, particularly through increased milk production. The Deputy Commissioner underscored that extending cooperative benefits to remote villages would play a key role in curbing rural-to-urban migration.
