International Women’s Day Celebrated at Government Model Degree College, Zanskar.
Zanskar, March 9, 2026: Government Model Degree College, Zanskar celebrated International Women’s Day under the supervision of the Principal, Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi. The event brought together faculty members and students to reflect on the role of women in shaping a progressive and inclusive society.
The program began with principal’s introductory address, followed by an insightful address by Ms. Uzma Ahad, Assistant Professor of Hindi, who spoke on the importance of empowering women through education, awareness, and equal opportunities. She highlighted that women constitute nearly half of the world’s population and therefore their participation in social, economic, and intellectual spheres is essential for meaningful development. Stressing the role of education as a transformative force, she encouraged students to challenge stereotypes and work towards building a society where women can realize their full potential.
This was followed by Mr. Hilal Ahmad, College Librarian, who delivered an engaging talk on gender equality. Drawing references from the works of renowned Urdu poets, he reflected on how literature has historically raised questions about women’s rights, dignity, and social justice. His remarks connected poetic expression with contemporary social realities, reminding the audience that the struggle for equality has long been echoed in literature and continues to inspire change today.
The next speaker, Dr. Jamphel Sheyan, Assistant Professor of English, contextualized gendered social norms within Ladakhi society. He spoke about the subtle ways in which gender roles are shaped and internalized in everyday life. Through relatable examples and personal reflections, he highlighted the persistence of everyday gender gaps and emphasized the importance of awareness, dialogue, and collective responsibility in creating a more balanced and equitable social environment.
In his concluding remarks, Dr. Amjad appreciated the insightful contributions of the speakers and highlighted the importance of sustained awareness and institutional support for women’s empowerment. He stressed that education plays a vital role in transforming attitudes and ensuring equal participation of women in all spheres of life. He also expressed pride in the growing number of female students in the college, noting that when women come forward to learn and lead, society moves closer to becoming more just, compassionate, and progressive.
The event concluded with a message of commitment towards fostering equality, respect, and opportunities for women, reaffirming the college’s dedication to nurturing an inclusive academic environment.
