ADDC Kargil Reviews Irrigation Khuls, Stresses Timely Restoration and Sustainable Water Solutions.
Kargil, April 07, 2026: Additional District Development Commissioner, Kargil, Sh. Ghulam Mohd (JKAS) chaired a meeting regarding Minor and Major Khuls today at NIC Hall, Baroo.
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the current status of irrigation khuls across the district. It was informed that mechanical support in the form of machines will be provided wherever feasible to address blockages and restoration works. The issue of a proper format for assessing damages and requirements was also discussed, and it was decided that a standardized mechanism will be adopted. Additionally, provisions related to fuel (oil) requirements for machinery operations are expected to be arranged and supplied accordingly.
The meeting also reviewed flood-related concerns affecting irrigation channels, with officers sharing ground-level inputs and mitigation measures.
Furthermore, it was informed that five ponds will be constructed in Drass, Chiktan, and Sankoo areas to support irrigation of agricultural fields. The issue of water sources was also deliberated, with emphasis laid on exploring sustainable solutions such as snow harvesting and efficient water catchment methods.
The ADDC stressed the need for timely intervention, coordinated efforts, and proper planning to ensure smooth irrigation facilities for farmers across the district.
The meeting was informed that 20 ponds have been identified by Department of Irrigation and Flood Control of which 06 will be constructed before 12th of this month. The identified ponds are three in Zanskar, and one each in Haqnis, Gindiyal and Lamar Drass.
The meeting concluded with directions to all concerned departments to take necessary action for effective implementation of the discussed measures.
