Leh, April 24: With the historic arrival of the Holy Relics of Tathagata Buddha for public exposition drawing near, the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Ladakh, Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, chaired a high-level review meeting to assess preparedness and oversee arrangements for the upcoming event.
During the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor conducted a comprehensive review of arrangements related to cleanliness, sanitation, security, traffic management, parking, drinking water, toilet facilities, power supply, transportation, and other critical infrastructure at all designated venues and sites. Emphasising the significance of the occasion, he stressed the need for meticulous planning and seamless coordination among all departments to ensure a safe, orderly, and spiritually fulfilling experience for devotees and visitors.
After taking stock of the preparations, the Lieutenant Governor issued the following directions to concerned departments:
Designated blocks accommodating around 100 people each to be created for better crowd management, particularly in view of the large gathering expected during the veneration of the relics and Buddha Purnima celebrations on May 1, to prevent any stampede-like situation.
Mobile toilets to be deployed at Jivetsal to meet the increased demand for sanitation facilities.
Strict avoidance of disposable plastic cups to minimise waste generation; deployment of dedicated cleaning teams and placement of dustbins at designated locations to maintain cleanliness.
Removal of broken fences, stones, and boulders along roadsides to ensure a neat and organised environment.
Deployment of garbage collection vehicles and use of jet sprays for cleaning roads and tiled areas to control dust and maintain hygiene.
Whitewashing of boundary walls along ITBP stretches to enhance the aesthetic appeal.
Provision of adequate transport facilities from the airport, including designated drop-off points and arrangements for ferrying devotees from villages, along with dissemination of bus schedules for public convenience.
Arrangements for traditional welcome, with people in traditional attire lining the route from the airport to Jivetsal on April 29- the day of arrival of sacred Buddha relics, and up to Sengge Namgyal Chowk on April 30, keeping in view the arrival of dignitaries.
Ensuring availability of potable drinking water by making taps at Jivetsal fully functional.
Deployment of sufficient medical personnel at designated points to provide immediate healthcare services.
Making elaborate arrangements for visitors at the Sound and Light Show at Leh Palace, including adequate seating facilities.
Placement of flower pots at key locations such as roundabouts and central road dividers, including sourcing from DIHAR.
Expedite installation of interlocking tiles along the Choglamsar route leading to Jivetsal by BRO to improve accessibility and infrastructure.
The Lieutenant Governor reiterated that the sacred exposition is a momentous occasion for Ladakh and the global Buddhist community. He directed all departments to work in close coordination and mission mode to ensure that the event is conducted in a smooth, organised, and dignified manner, reflecting Ladakh’s rich spiritual heritage and hospitality.
