GDC Khaltse Organises an ‘Anti-Drug Awareness’ Program.
An anti-drug awareness programme under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was organised at Govt Degree college Khaltse in collaboration with the Ladakh Police with the aim of creating awareness among students about the growing menace of substance abuse in society.
The event commenced with the felicitation of guest speaker SHO Jamyang Namgyal with traditional khataks by Principal Dr. Sameena Iqbal, followed by her welcome address. In her remarks, the Principal highlighted the importance of staying away from drugs and encouraged students to play an active role in building a healthy and responsible society.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Jamyang Namgyal, SHO Khaltsi Police Station spoke extensively on the alarming rise of drug abuse in Ladakh and its serious social and health consequences. He discussed different types of drugs reportedly being used in the region, including brown sugar, heroin, charas, and LSD, and explained their fatal impact on the human body. He further elaborated on how substance dependence develops over time and how gateway addictions such as cigarettes and tobacco often become stepping stones towards more dangerous drugs.
He also raised concern over increasing public health risks, including the spread of hepatitis due to syringe sharing among drug users. He informed the audience about the active role being played by Ladakh Police in tackling drug trafficking and apprehending peddlers, while stressing the need for stronger cooperation from civil society. He urged the people of Ladakh, especially the youth, to take collective responsibility in combating drug abuse and safeguarding the future of society.
