    Leh, May 16, 2026: A mega cleanliness drive was successfully conducted at Sub-Division Kharu on May 16, 2026, starting from Shende Morh near Stakna to up Upshi, including the market area on the directions and guidance of Deputy Commissioner, Leh, Romil Singh Donk (IAS). The drive was led by Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Kharu, Mohd Shabbir, with the aim of promoting cleanliness, strengthening public awareness, and encouraging community participation towards maintaining a clean and healthy environment in the region.
    The drive witnessed active participation include BDO Kharu and other employees from various departments of Sub Division Kharu and organisations, Ladakh Police, Army, 11 RCC BRO, officials from the Department of Rural Development, Leh, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Foundation supported by HDFC Bank Parivartan, Marchant Association Kharu, and volunteers. The collective effort reflected strong coordination and unity among the administration, security forces, development agencies, and the local community.
    During the drive, volunteers and officials jointly cleaned roadsides, market areas, and public spaces by removing plastic waste, garbage, and other litter. The collected waste was properly gathered and disposed of to ensure improved sanitation and a cleaner surrounding. The campaign also served as an awareness initiative, encouraging shopkeepers, commuters, and residents to maintain cleanliness and avoid dumping waste in public places.
    While addressing the participants, SDM Kharu Mohd Shabir emphasised the importance of conducting such drives regularly. He stated that cleanliness campaigns play a significant role in sensitising people about hygiene, public health, and environmental responsibility. He appreciated the dedication and active participation of all departments, organisations, and volunteers for making the initiative successful.
    The SDM further expressed hope that with consistent community support, Ladakh can set an example for other regions by preserving its natural beauty and maintaining a clean environment. He appealed to the public to take personal responsibility in keeping their surroundings clean and to refrain from throwing garbage along roads, market areas, and open spaces.
    The cleanliness drive was described as a meaningful step towards building a cleaner Ladakh and inspiring similar initiatives across other villages and subdivisions. Participants also urged residents to continue supporting such efforts to protect Ladakh’s unique environment and ensure a cleaner and healthier future for coming generations.
