Leh, May 22, 2026: The third day of the ongoing Ladakh Astro Week 2026 was successfully held today at the picturesque Sand Dunes of Hunder in Nubra Valley. The event is being organised by the Department of Tourism, UT Ladakh, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA).
The programme featured a series of engaging astronomy sessions aimed at promoting scientific awareness and astro-tourism in the region. The event commenced with a Ladakhi-language talk titled “Are Black Holes Really Black? – An Introduction to Black Hole Physics”, which attracted keen interest from participants and visitors alike.
This was followed by an expert talk on “The Sun: A Force to Reckon With” delivered by Associate Professor Jayant Joshi from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru. The session provided fascinating insights into the Sun’s role, structure, and influence on space and life on Earth.
One of the major highlights of the event was the Astrophotography Gallery, where breathtaking images of celestial objects and night skies captured by astrophotographers were displayed for the audience. The gallery received an overwhelming response from visitors and photography enthusiasts alike.
Administrative Secretary, Tourism Department, UT Ladakh, Shri Sanjit Rodrigues attended the event as the Chief Guest, while Deputy Commissioner, Nubra, Shri Mukul Beniwal was present as the Guest of Honour.
Among others present on the occasion were Sub Divisional Magistrate, Nubra, Jigmet Raftan; Assistant Director, Tourism Leh, Padma Angmo, resource persons from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, astronomy enthusiasts, local residents, students and a large number of tourists.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation and highlighted Ladakh’s growing potential as a destination for astro-tourism owing to its clear skies and unique geographical landscape.
