Ladakh Astro Week 2026 Organised at Kargil.
Kargil, May 24: As part of the ongoing Ladakh Astro Week 2026, the Department of Tourism, UT Ladakh in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) organised an Astro Tourism programme at Purig Guest House near TV Station Kurbathang, Kargil.
Assistant Director Tourism Kargil, Muhammad Ali Tak besides officers from various departments, teaching staff from different educational institutions and Government Degree College (GDC) Kargil, cultural artists, students, tourists and local residents attended the programme.
The programme featured astronomy awareness sessions, exhibition stalls, astrophotography displays, astro talks and guided telescope-based stargazing sessions. Various stalls showcasing local handloom, handicrafts, traditional cuisine, artefacts and cultural display stalls were also put up for participants and visitors.
Addressing the gathering, the speakers highlighted the importance of promoting astro-tourism in Ladakh and creating awareness among youth regarding astronomy and scientific learning. Students were encouraged to interact with experts and take advantage of such educational initiatives.
Assistant Director Tourism Kargil, Muhammad Ali Tak, in his address said that the aim of organising the programme was to promote Kargil as an emerging destination for astro-tourism under the pristine dark skies of Ladakh. He added that the festival provides a unique opportunity to blend science, tourism and local culture while fostering scientific temperament among the younger generation.
The sessions were conducted with the support of experts from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru and associated astronomy teams, where participants observed celestial objects through telescopes under the clear night skies of Kargil.
