Drass, June 03, 2026: Deputy Commissioner Drass, Imteeaz Kacho launched the Drass Summer Carnival organized by Headquarters 56 Mountain Brigade in presence of Colonel Harkirat and Councillor LAHDC-Kargtil Abdul Wahid at the Lt. Col. R. Vishwanathan VrC Stadium, Drass (Sando Rear). The carnival is being held from 3rd to 7th June as a precursor to the Kargil Vijay Diwas (KVD) celebrations.
The Deputy Commissioner witnessed the horse polo match and an archery match during the occasion. He appreciated the efforts of the 56 Mountain Brigade for encouraging traditional sports in Drass. He emphasized that such initiatives not only provide recreational opportunities to the public but also strengthen community participation, preserve local traditions and promote tourism in the region.
The Summer Carnival has been organized with the objective of providing a joyful, engaging, and inclusive platform for the local community while promoting the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the region. The first day of the event witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, youth, tourists and various stakeholders.
Major highlights of the carnival will be traditional sporting events including horse polo, archery and tent pegging reflecting the unique cultural and sporting traditions of the area. In addition, a variety of cultural programmes showcasing local art, music, and folk traditions will be held to entertain and engage visitors.
The carnival will also feature vibrant stalls exhibiting local handicrafts, handloom products, traditional cuisine and cultural displays from different communities and Government departments. These exhibitions aim at promoting local artisans, entrepreneurs and the rich cultural diversity of the region.
The Summer Carnival is expected to attract large numbers of visitors and serve as a significant attraction in the run-up to the Kargil Vijay Diwas commemorations.
Later during the day, the Deputy Commissioner attended the final match of the Tanmir Premier League (TPL) at KBS Cricket Ground. He was accompanied by the Superintendent of Police, Ishtyaq Kacho and Councillor Bhimbat Abdul Wahid.
On the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner appreciated the enthusiasm, discipline, and sportsmanship displayed by the participating teams and players throughout the tournament. He and the other guests distributed prizes among the winning and participating players and congratulated the organizers for successfully conducting the event.
He highlighted the importance and vast scope of sports in promoting physical fitness, youth engagement, and community development. While urging youngster to stay away from drugs and crime, he encouraged young players of Drass to actively participate in sports activities and strive for excellence at higher levels.
