Kargil, June 04, 2026: The Department of Agriculture, Kargil, is organizing a month-long awareness and outreach campaign titled “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” from 1st June to 30th June 2026 across the district. The campaign aims to promote the protection, conservation, and sustainable utilization of agricultural land while creating awareness among farmers about various developmental initiatives of the department.
On the fourth day of the campaign, the Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Rural Development Department (RDD), Chiktan, organized a Plantation Drive at the newly developed command area of Barkdok Thang, Bodh Kharbu under the national theme “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.”
The plantation drive was undertaken with the objective of protecting agricultural land from degradation, improving the local environment, and addressing the future fuelwood and timber requirements of the inhabitants. During the programme, around 1,500 Salix saplings were planted by farmers, villagers and officials. The initiative is expected to contribute significantly towards ecological conservation, soil stabilization, and the creation of sustainable green cover in the area.
A Farmers’ Training Camp was also organized under the Sub-Mission on Agroforestry (SMAF) to promote agroforestry practices and encourage farmers to integrate tree plantation with agricultural activities for long-term economic and environmental benefits.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from local farmers, SHGs, Ama Chokspa members, and officials of the Agriculture and Rural Development Departments. During the training session, officers of the Agriculture Department provided detailed awareness on various farmer-centric schemes and programmes, including the Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) Scheme for Micro-Irrigation, Natural Farming, Organic Farming, Ladakh Greenhouse Scheme, Kisan Credit Card (KCC), PM-KISAN, Vegetable Development Programme, and Mushroom Development Programme.
The officers also interacted extensively with the farming community, addressing their queries and concerns. Grievances and feedback received from the participants were taken up and resolved on the spot, reflecting the department’s commitment to responsive and farmer-friendly governance.
The Department of Agriculture reiterated its commitment to strengthening agricultural development through community participation, environmental conservation, and effective implementation of government schemes. Similar activities, including awareness camps and field-level interactions, will continue throughout the month under the “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” campaign across different parts of Kargil district.
