DC Changthang Flags Off Breeder Tour, Distributes Incentives at Mega Livestock Mela in Satto Kargiam.
DURBUK, LADAKH — A grand Livestock Show-cum-Mela under the National Livestock Mission (NLM) was organized by the Sheep Husbandry Department at Satto Kargiam village in the Durbuk sub-division [July 2, 2026]. The event aimed to educate local breeders on modern management techniques and boost the livestock sector in the region.Deputy Commissioner (DC) Changthang, Shri Nitish Rajora (IAS), graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Other prominent dignitaries included Director of Sheep Husbandry, Dr. Iftikhar Hussain; Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Durbuk, Shri Mohd Ismail (JKAS); District Sheep Husbandry Officer, Dr. Tsewang Morup; and Assistant Director PGF Khuril, Dr. Mohd Sadiq.
Key Highlights of the EventAwareness & Education: Dr. Nasreen Fatima, Block Officer Durbuk, introduced the guests and briefed the breeders on various departmental schemes. Dr. Mohd Sadiq educated the herders on the economic importance of Pashmina and the value addition of livestock by-products.
Exhibitions & Live Demos: Departmental stalls displayed cutting-edge livestock management equipment. Local Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) exhibited handcrafted Pashmina shawls and garments. A live demonstration of traditional Pashmina combing was also presented to the dignitaries.
Livestock Competitions: Highly competitive rounds saw Changra goats (Caprine species) and Changluk sheep (Ovine species) compete for the best animal titles. Selection was based on body weight, conformation, and Pashmina yield.
Awards & Incentives: Cash prizes were awarded to the best five goats, best five sheep, and breeders owning the highest livestock strength in each village.
Support Distribution: Essential relief materials, including portable tents, milk churning machines, protective boots, and LED lights with predator-proof corrals, were distributed to help breeders survive harsh winter conditions.
Exposure Tour: To conclude the program, DC Changthang flagged off a group of 10 progressive breeders from the Durbuk block for a 3-day inter-district exposure tour under the NLM.
