Leh, July 21: The Information Technology Department, Union Territory of Ladakh, presented the progress of the State Wide Area Network (SWAN) Project during a review meeting chaired by Joint Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, Shri Nand Kumarumaran, IAS.
The meeting commenced with opening remarks by Under Secretary, IT Department, Dr. Sanjat, who welcomed the participants and outlined the significance of strengthening Ladakh’s digital governance infrastructure through robust and secure connectivity.
Thereafter, SeMT representative Sonam delivered a detailed presentation on the implementation status of the SWAN Project across the Union Territory. The presentation highlighted the significant progress achieved in expanding secure digital connectivity to government offices despite the unique geographical and logistical challenges of Ladakh.
It was informed that the IT Department has successfully installed and commissioned the Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN), integrated with Internet Leased Line (ILL) and Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) connectivity, across 29 out of 31 Block Headquarters and 95 Gram Panchayats in the Union Territory. All connected Block Offices are now utilizing the secure SWAN network for official government operations, enabling seamless communication, efficient service delivery, and improved digital governance.
The presentation further underscored that these milestones have been achieved despite Ladakh’s challenging terrain, harsh climatic conditions, and the presence of several non-feasible locations with limited road access and telecom infrastructure. The successful implementation reflects the sustained efforts of the IT Department and its technical teams in ensuring reliable digital connectivity in one of the country’s most geographically demanding regions.
The review meeting provided an opportunity to assess the project’s progress, discuss the remaining implementation targets, and explore measures for further strengthening digital infrastructure to support e-Governance initiatives across the Union Territory.
