GDC Zanskar Concludes Two-Day Self-Defence Training Programme for Girls under PM-USHA.
Zanskar, July 24, 2026: Government Degree College (GDC) Zanskar successfully concluded a two-day Self-Defence Training Programme for girl under the PM-USHA Scheme on Friday. The programme aimed to promote women’s safety, self-confidence, awareness, and empowerment through practical self-defence training.
The program was organized under the patronage of Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, Principal, GDC Zanskar, coordinated by Dr. Mohd Hussain, Senior Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, and Dr. Zaffer Iqbal, Assistant Professor, Department of Education, moderated the proceedings.
The inaugural session began with a welcome address by Dr. Mohd Hussain, who highlighted the importance of equipping young women with self-defence skills in today’s society. Faculty members and a large number of female students participated enthusiastically in the programme.
The resource person, Mr. Stanzin Odzer, a Karate Trainer and Black Belt in Martial Arts, spoke about the significance of self-defence as an essential life skill. He emphasized that self-defence is not only about protecting oneself physically but also about developing confidence, discipline, presence of mind, and mental resilience.
Both days of the programme featured extensive practical training sessions.
On the second day, intensive hands-on training was conducted, during which participants learned and practiced various self-defence techniques, situational awareness, methods of escaping dangerous situations, and effective response strategies under expert guidance.
Addressing the participants during the valedictory session, Dr. Mohd Hussain remarked that such programmes are essential for empowering young women and should be organized regularly to help students develop confidence, awareness, and the ability to safeguard themselves in challenging situations.
He expressed sincere gratitude to Smt. Bhanu Prabha, IAS, Secretary, Higher Education Department, for supporting the initiative under the PM-USHA Scheme. He also thanked Dr. Amjad Ali Abassi, Principal, GDC Zanskar, for his constant encouragement and support in making the programme a success.
Dr. Hussain further appreciated the dedicated efforts of resource person Mr. Stanzin Odzer for sparing his valuable time to provide practical training and create awareness among the girl students regarding personal safety and self-defence.
The two-day training programme concluded successfully, reaffirming GDC Zanskar’s commitment to promoting women’s empowerment, holistic education, and student welfare through meaningful initiatives under the PM-USHA Scheme.
