Assistant Labour Commissioner Inspects Construction Site at Skara Over Non-Payment of Wages.
Leh, July 30: Acting on complaints regarding the non-payment of wages to migrant labourers from Bihar, the Assistant Labour Commissioner, Leh, accompanied by the Labour Inspector and other officials of the Labour Department, Leh, conducted an inspection of a government construction site at Skara on Thursday.
The inspection was carried out following allegations that a government contractor had failed to pay wages to several Bihari labourers engaged at the construction site. During the visit, the labourers were interviewed individually, and their statements regarding pending wages, duration of employment, and working conditions were recorded by the inspection team.
Officials also examined relevant employment records maintained by the contractor to verify compliance with labour laws. The Assistant Labour Commissioner directed the contractor to produce all necessary records and explain the delay in disbursing wages to the workers.
The Labour Department reiterated that every worker is entitled to receive wages within the prescribed time under the applicable labour laws and that withholding wages without lawful justification is a serious violation. The department assured the workers that appropriate legal action would be initiated if any violations are established during the inquiry.
The Assistant Labour Commissioner stated that the Labour Department remains committed to protecting the rights and welfare of all workers, including migrant labourers, and urged employers and contractors to comply strictly with labour laws and ensure timely payment of wages.
Further action will be taken based on the findings of the inspection and the outcome of the ongoing inquiry.
