Two-Day Kisan Mela-cum-Exhibition Organised by Agriculture Department in Zanskar.
Zanskar, September 5, 2026:
The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, UT Ladakh, organised a two-day Kisan Mela-cum-Exhibition at the Tourist Dak Bungalow, Padum Zanskar, on 4th and 5th, of September 2026, with the aim of promoting modern agricultural practices, showcasing local farm produce, and creating awareness among farmers about various schemes, technologies and opportunities available in the agriculture sector.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from around 200 farmers from different villages of Zanskar District, who actively participated in the various activities and interacted with officers and experts from the Agriculture and line Department.
Sh. Omkar Rajendra Gundage, IAS, Deputy Commissioner, Zanskar, attended the programme as the Chief Guest, while Sh. Rigzin Sangdup, JKPS, Superintendent of Police, Zanskar, was the Guest of Honour.Sh. Ashiq Hussain Basharat Chief Agriculture Officer Kargil and other District Officers from Kargil and Zanskar District were also present during the event. Presidents and representatives of various religious and social organisations also attended the programme and extended their support to the farming community.
A major attraction of the event was the Crop Competition, to recognise excellence in crop production.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest appreciated the Agriculture Department for organising the Kisan Mela and emphasised the importance of strengthening the agriculture sector in Zanskar. He encouraged farmers to make optimum use of modern technologies, departmental schemes to improve farm-based livelihoods.
The Guest of Honour also appreciated the participation and enthusiasm of the farming community and stressed the importance of collective efforts for the sustainable development of agriculture in the region. The function was concluded with an award giving ceremony in which Ist , 2nd and 3rd prize was distributed to the wining farmers in 20 crop category.
