Nubra, July 2, 2026: Administrative Secretary, Sh. Sanjit Rodrigues, IAS, today graced the Sand Dunes Festival 2026 at Hunder as the Chief Guest.
The Deputy Commissioner Nubra, sh. Mukul Beniwal, IAS and the Superintendent of Police, Nubra,sh. Stanzin Losal, JKPS attended as Guests of Honour, while the SDM Nubra, Sh. Jigmet Raftan, JKAS, and Former Deputy CEC ,Sh. Tsering Angchuk were also present as a special guests.
The programme commenced with the traditional Shondol dance followed by cultural performances.
Addressing the gathering, the Administrative Secretary said that while tourist footfall in Nubra has increased significantly, the responsibility to protect its fragile ecosystem has also grown. He called upon all stakeholders to work together towards sustainable tourism, effective waste management, and environmental conservation, while assuring the Administration’s continued support for promoting tourism in the region.
The Deputy Commissioner, Nubra, described the Hunder Sand Dunes as an ecologically sensitive and fragile landscape, stressing that their protection and sanitation should remain the highest priority. He emphasised that tourism should be not only responsible but also mindful, fostering a shared sense of ownership. He appealed to the public to support the ban on single-use plastic, help make Nubra a drug-free district, comply with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, and urged tourists to refrain from prohibited activities.
The Superintendent of Police highlighted initiatives being taken to ensure a safe and secure environment for tourists through the deployment of police personnel at key tourist destinations and effective traffic management. He also spoke about ongoing awareness campaigns aimed at making Nubra a drug-free district.
Former Deputy Chief Executive Councillor emphasised the importance of sustainable tourism and urged all stakeholders to work collectively for the promotion and preservation of tourism in the region.
The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from Heads of Departments, tourists from different parts of the country and residents of Nubra, making the festival a vibrant celebration of the region’s unique cultural and natural heritage.
