Animal Health Camp Held at Choskor Panikhar in Collaboration with Indian Army
Kargil, 7th August 2026:
The Department of Animal Husbandry, Kargil, in collaboration with the 154 Field Regiment of the Indian Army, organised an Animal Health Camp at Choskor, Panikhar, with the objective of providing quality veterinary healthcare services and scientific animal husbandry guidance to livestock owners in the remote and far-flung areas of the district.
The camp was organised under the guidance of Dr. Gulzar Hussain, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Kargil, with the active participation of the Block Veterinary Officer, Sankoo, Veterinary Assistant Surgeon, Panikhar, doctors associated with the Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs), and the field staff of the Animal Husbandry Department. Senior Veterinary Pharmacists (SVPs), Veterinary Pharmacists (VPs) and other supporting field staff also actively participated in the camp and contributed to the successful delivery of veterinary services.
During the camp, a total of 34 livestock animals were examined and treated for various health conditions. Around 49 livestock farmers actively participated in the programme and were provided awareness and guidance on scientific livestock management, disease prevention, balanced nutrition, hygiene, timely veterinary intervention and improved animal husbandry practices.
A special focus was laid on reproductive health and management of bovines. Pregnancy diagnosis of four bovine animals was successfully carried out using an advanced pregnancy diagnostic kit, enabling early and accurate detection of pregnancy and facilitating appropriate feeding and management of the animals during the gestation period.
To improve the nutritional status and productivity of livestock, mineral mixture supplements were also distributed among the participating farmers. The farmers were sensitised about the importance of mineral supplementation for maintaining optimum health, reproductive efficiency, growth and productivity of livestock.
The veterinary teams also interacted with the livestock owners and addressed their field-level concerns, providing practical advice on preventive healthcare, nutrition, disease control, reproductive management and scientific livestock husbandry practices. The participation of the Mobile Veterinary Unit doctors and the entire field staff, including SVPs and VPs, helped in providing comprehensive veterinary services to the livestock-owning community.
The camp was particularly significant in view of the difficult terrain and remote location of the area, where regular access to veterinary healthcare services can be challenging. Such doorstep veterinary outreach programmes play an important role in safeguarding livestock health, improving productivity and strengthening the livelihoods of livestock-dependent communities.
The Department of Animal Husbandry, Kargil, expressed its appreciation for the valuable cooperation and support extended by the 154 Field Regiment of the Indian Army in organising the camp. The initiative reflects the spirit of collaboration between the Indian Army and the Animal Husbandry Department in extending essential veterinary and livelihood support to communities residing in remote areas.
The camp was well received and appreciated by the local farming community. The Department reiterated its commitment to further strengthening mobile veterinary outreach and doorstep veterinary services across remote areas of Kargil district, with particular emphasis on preventive healthcare, reproductive management, nutrition, disease control and sustainable livestock production.
