    Zanskar, August 19, 2026: The Tehsil Social Welfare Office, Zanskar, in collaboration with the Police Department and Medical Department, Zanskar, organized an awareness programme on Drug and Substance Abuse at Government Higher Secondary School, Padum, under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
    The programme was attended by the Principal, teaching and non-teaching staff and hundreds of students, reflecting the active participation and growing awareness among the youth regarding the serious issue of drug and substance abuse.
    Tehsil Social Welfare Officer, Sh. Ghulam Rasool Lal, welcomed all the participants and highlighted the importance of conducting such awareness programmes, particularly among students and young people. He briefed the gathering about the role of the Social Welfare Department in prevention, awareness, counselling, rehabilitation and community participation in the fight against substance abuse. The participants also took the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to contribute towards a drug-free society.
    Dr. Rehmat Ali, Orthopedician, Medical Department, delivered a detailed awareness session on the physical and psychological effects of drug and substance abuse. He sensitized the students about the harmful impact of addiction on health, education, family life and future prospects.
    Sub-Inspector Stanzin Choszom, Police Department, apprised the students about the legal and social consequences of drug abuse, emphasizing the importance of staying away from drugs and making responsible choices. Lecturer Sh. Lobzang further sensitized the students by sharing a case study of a drug user, highlighting the devastating impact of addiction on an individual’s personal, family and social life.
    An interactive question-and-answer session was also conducted, wherein students actively participated and raised queries related to drug abuse, prevention, rehabilitation and legal consequences. The queries were addressed by the resource persons in an informative and engaging manner.
    The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Sh. Feroz Ali, Social Worker, who expressed gratitude to the school administration, resource persons, staff and students for their active participation and cooperation.
    The Tehsil Social Welfare Office reiterated its commitment to strengthening awareness and preventive efforts under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and encouraged the youth to become responsible ambassadors for building a healthy, aware and drug-free Zanskar.
