Conservation Awareness Workshop on Biodiversity Monitoring Held at Govt Degree College Drass.
Drass, April 07, 2026: The Himalayan Citizen Science and Biodiversity Centre of Government Degree College Drass organized a Conservation Awareness Workshop on the theme “Biodiversity Monitoring and Conservation with the Indian Army.” The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members, and experts.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by the Principal, Nasirul Mehdi Shabani, who highlighted the ecological sensitivity of Ladakh and stressed the importance of collaborative conservation efforts.
The workshop featured distinguished resource persons, Ms. Dhanashree and Ms. Beena from Canine Control & Care. In her engaging session, Ms. Beena delivered a comprehensive talk on the sterilization of dogs, elaborating on its scientific basis, advantages, and associated challenges. She discussed its significant impact on both human populations and wildlife, particularly in maintaining ecological balance and reducing conflict. She also introduced the audience to the activities of the Canine Control & Care NGO and emphasized the importance of community participation in initiatives such as catching, sterilizing, and re-releasing dogs in their original habitats as a sustainable management strategy.
Project Head, Dr. Mohd Raza from Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), Ladakh, also addressed the gathering and shared valuable insights on biodiversity conservation in fragile Himalayan ecosystems, highlighting the need for scientific monitoring and public involvement.
The programme was gracefully anchored by Ms. Khadija Banoo, a student of 2nd semester, GDC Drass.
The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks presented by Dr. Deechan Angmo, Faculty, Department of Botany, who expressed gratitude to all dignitaries, organizers, and participants for their contributions in making the programme a success.
The workshop served as an important platform for raising awareness about biodiversity conservation and fostering collaboration among academic institutions, conservation organizations, and the Indian Army.
