    DC Kargil chairs District Disaster Management Authority meeting.
    Kargil, July 15: A meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) took place under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Shrikant Suse, who also serves as the Chairman of DDMA Kargil.
    The meeting was held at the Conference Hall in Baroo and focused specifically on enhancing preparedness for critical types of natural disasters: Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) and floods resulting from cloud burst events within the district.
    Apart from DC Kargil the meeting was attended by Lieutenant Colonel Manish Joshi who serves as the Nodal Officer for Disaster Management, SSP Kargil, Shree Ram R, ADC Kargil Suhail Ahmad, ACR Kargil, Mohd Sharif, Chief Engineer of Distribution, PDD Ladakh Tsewang Paljor, Chief Engineer R&B Maqbool, AEE Irrigation Mohd Sadiq, along with concerned Block Development Officers (BDOs) from various sub-divisions.
    Also present were AEE A&B Sadiq, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of District Hospital Kargil, Liyaqat Ali, HQ to DC Office Arifa Iqbal, Inspector Anchuk, and Inspector Jameel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).
    During the meeting, Lieutenant Colonel Manish Joshi provided a comprehensive presentation detailing the causes and consequences of cloud bursts, drawing on the 2010 incident in Leh as a case study.
    He highlighted significant challenges encountered during that event, such as shortages in trained personnel, lack of advanced equipment, communication difficulties, and delays in providing immediate disaster relief.
    Emphasizing proactive measures, Joshi stressed the critical importance of implementing preventive actions to minimize potential harm to both lives and property in future incidents.
    The Deputy Commissioner Kargil directed all SDMs to prioritize readiness measures, ensuring adequate stocks, equipment readiness, and comprehensive training for officials and volunteers at Panchayat Level.
    He also instructed CMO to conduct essential medical training sessions, including CPR and oxygen supply procedures, for all medical personnel across the sub-divisional areas.
    During the discussion, DC Kargil welcomed suggestions and feedback from all attending officers to optimize disaster preparedness strategies.
    SSP Kargil contributed to the meeting by highlighting recent expeditions conducted in Kargil, the successful installation of satellite phones to enhance communication capabilities, daily monitoring initiatives led by the Police Headquarters (PHQ), and ongoing training sessions tailored for the Union Territory Disaster Response Force (DRF).
    He further identified specific vulnerable areas within the district, such as Padum and Panikhar glaciers, underscoring the importance of targeted preventive measures and preparedness in these high-risk zones.
