    DC Kargil Chairs Vigilance Committee Meeting on SC/ST Atrocities Act, Stresses Wider Awareness.
    Kargil, March 18, 2026: The Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Sh. Rakesh Kumar (IAS) chaired a meeting of the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee regarding the Prevention of Atrocities under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
    The Hon’ble Executive Councillor, Syed Mujtaba; Councillor Baroo Constituency, Khadim Hussain; Additional SSP, Ishtyaq Kacho; DSWO, Samina Khatoon; Deputy Commissioner (Retired), Hassan Khan, Dy. CMO Kargil and Dr. Fatima Banoo attended the meeting.
    The meeting commenced with Samina Khatoon, District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), briefing the members on the PoA Act.
    Following this, the Deputy Commissioner shared his views and directed officials to spread special awareness about the Act and its provisions among students, traders, ITI trainees, merchant associations, transport associations, drivers, labourers, and taxi unions who travel outside the district.
    He also instructed the DSWO to involve the Labour Department and Police Department. Additionally, the DC directed that awareness programs be integrated with the District Disability Action Committee (DDAC) and District Tobacco Cessation Center (DTCC).
    Emphasizing the importance of responsible awareness efforts, the DC stressed that the Act must not be misused. He further directed the Police and Social Welfare Departments to identify cases requiring relief and rehabilitation outside the state. The meeting also focused on promoting marriage registration.
