Kargil, July 22, 2025: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Kargil, in collaboration with the Union Territory Disaster Response Force (UT-DRF) held a disaster preparedness and awareness camp in Sankoo on Tuesday, aimed at enhancing public understanding of emergency response and life-saving techniques.
The session was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Imteeaz Kacho (JKAS); Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Sankoo, Waseem Ramzan; Executive Engineer of PWD’s Suru Valley Division, BMO, Sankoo and Taisuru; Zonal Education Officer, Sankoo and Taisuru as well as officials from various Departments of the Sankoo S-Sub-Division. Staff and students of the Sankoo Campus of Government Degree College Kargil; volunteers of Basij-e-Baqiyatullah, Sankoo and a large number of local residents also participated in the event.
The Resource Person deputed by NHPC-Kargil delivered a focused session on Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) detailing causes and preventive measures. Trainers from the UT-DRF and Fire & Emergency Services emphasized the importance of scientific approaches during crises, urging participants to avoid unsafe traditional practices—such as pressing the neck during a choking incident—and instead relying on certified first-aid methods.
One of the key highlights of the camp was a live demonstration on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The instructor explained how CPR can revive a person experiencing clinical death where the heart and lungs have stopped but brain activity continues.
Participants also learned essential bandaging techniques for head, arm and leg injuries. Trainers demonstrated the use of wooden splints to stabilze fractures with emphasis on knot placement away from injured areas to minimize pain.
Instructors further showed how to create make-shift stretchers using household items such as blankets and wooden poles, offering practical solutions for transporting the injured during emergencies when conventional help may be delayed.
The camp saw enthusiastic participation with hands-on demonstrations empowering attendees with basic disaster response skills and strengthening community readiness.
ADC Imteeaz Kacho interacted with the participants of the awareness camp/mock drill and highlighted the importance of ‘presence of mind’ when disasters strikes. He elaborated by stating that a person will be able to save lives of others only if he/she remains alert during crisis. He appreciated the role of the DDMA team, the UT-DRF team and the personnel of the Fire & Emergency Services whose practical guidance turned out to be quite effective and informative for the spectators and participants. He asserted the need for conducting similar camps at other locations of the District regularly.
Concluding the event, SDM-Sankoo express gratitude to the ADC and other guests while appreciating the efforts of DDMA, UTDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, college students, volunteers and other participating Departments. He also urged the authorities to conduct similar awareness programmes in Taisuru to ensure broader public preparedness across the region.
