Department of Agriculture Distributes Button Mushroom Units to Farmers and SHGs in Kargil.
Kargil, August 5, 2026: The Department of Agriculture, Kargil today organized the distribution of Button Mushroom Cultivation Units among progressive farmers and Self Help Groups (SHGs) of Kargil district under the subsidy scheme of LAHDC Kargil. The initiative aims to promote mushroom cultivation as a sustainable and remunerative source of income for farming households.
The distribution programme was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Executive Councillor for Agriculture, Aga Syed Mujtaba Musavi, in the presence of Chief Agriculture Officer Kargil and Principal Scientist, Dr. Mohd Mehdi.
Speaking on the occasion, the Hon’ble Executive Councillor emphasized that mushroom cultivation offers an excellent opportunity for income generation and livelihood diversification, particularly for rural youth and women. He appreciated the efforts of the Department of Agriculture in promoting innovative agricultural enterprises and encouraged the beneficiaries to adopt scientific cultivation practices to maximize production and profitability.
During the programme, around 2,400 compost bags, along with quality mushroom spawn and casing material, were distributed among a large number of beneficiary farmers and SHGs from different parts of the district to enable them to take up button mushroom cultivation during the current season.
Earlier, Assistant Soil Chemist Sh. Mohd Hussain, District Agriculture Officer Ms. Razia Banoo, and Principal Scientist, Dr. Akhon Mehdi, conducted a comprehensive training-cum-demonstration for the participating farmers. The technical session covered the scientific method of spawning, preparation and management of compost, casing operations, and other essential cultivation practices required for successful button mushroom production.
The Department reiterated its commitment to extending technical guidance and necessary support to farmers for expanding mushroom cultivation across the district, thereby enhancing farm incomes and strengthening sustainable agricultural development in Kargil.
