Empowering Local Leadership: KVK Nyoma and Agriculture Department Unite for ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ Sarpanch/Goba Sammelan.
As part of the ongoing Khet Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Farm Campaign), a landmark Sarpanch/Gobas Sammelan was convened at Nyoma on 22 June 2026, bringing together a cross-section of influential local leaders to strategize on the future of agriculture in the cold arid landscape of Changthang.
The collaborative effort, led by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Nyoma, UoL, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Nyoma Zone, saw the active participation of 21 former Sarpanches, former Panches, Nambardars, and village representatives. Delegates from Nyoma, Nidder, Nyoma TR, and Mud villages engaged in a day of critical discourse aimed at protecting local farmland and enhancing agricultural productivity.
Dr. Phuntsog Tundup, Head of KVK Nyoma, presided over the session, providing the audience with a detailed briefing on the objectives and backdrop of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan.
“The strength of this campaign lies in the hands of our local representatives,” said Dr. Tundup. “In the unique, high-altitude environment of Changthang, the shift toward natural farming and rigorous soil health management is not just a trend—it is a necessity for long-term survival. We look to our village leaders to champion these sustainable practices within their communities.”
Providing a roadmap for institutional support, Miss Nawang Palkit, In-charge AEO of the Nyoma Zone, outlined the various government schemes currently available to farmers in the region. The presentation served as a critical touchpoint for village representatives to understand how they can better facilitate the flow of departmental resources to local fields, ensuring that no farmer is left behind.
Refining the focus from cultivation to commerce, Dr. Tashi Dolkar, Scientist at KVK Nyoma, highlighted the untapped potential of value addition in local vegetable production. Dr. Dolkar explains how simple value-addition techniques could significantly elevate household incomes, offering a pathway for farmers to increase their profit margins despite the geographical challenges of the region.
The event concluded on a note of collaboration, with Dr. Dolkar delivering the vote of thanks. She praised the attendees for their proactive engagement, noting that the synergy between scientific expertise and local leadership is the primary driver for a self-reliant agricultural future in the Changthang district.
The Sarpanch/Goba Sammelan stands as a testament to the growing momentum of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, signaling a unified regional commitment to protecting the land while fostering modern, sustainable prosperity.
