Flash Flood in Stakpa Nalla; SDM Sankoo Orders Urgent Restoration Measures.
Kargil, June 26, 2025 – Following the flash flood that struck Stakpa Nalla on Wednesday, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Sankoo, Sh. Waseem Ramzan (JKAS), dispatched a multidisciplinary team to assess damage to public infrastructure and private properties.
The assessment team, led by Tehsildar Sankoo, Sh. Talib Hussain, and accompanied by Hon’ble Councilor Lankerchay, Sh. Ghulam Haider, inspected the affected areas. Their assessment covered damage to trees, agricultural land, internal roads, irrigation khuls, traditional water mills, and other utilities.
During the inspection, it was found that the Nalla had significantly deviated from its original course, veering toward arable land and residential areas. This diversion caused soil erosion and posed a threat to properties located along its new path. To mitigate further damage, Tehsildar Sankoo directed the Junior Engineer (JE) of the Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department to immediately deploy a JCB and divert the Nalla back to its original course. The Executing Engineer, I&FC Kargil, was also informed telephonically and assured timely execution of the redirection work.
The team further visited the upper reaches of the Nalla, where rubble accumulation had blocked internal roads in Stakpa village. Several vehicles were trapped, and two traditional water mills at the base of the Nalla were damaged. One residential house also sustained minor damage from debris.
In response, the Tehsildar initiated the formal assessment of affected properties through designated officials. Meanwhile, departments were instructed to begin debris clearance on priority.
Restoration of critical irrigation infrastructure was also addressed. The I&FC Department was directed to repair damaged irrigation channels and headworks ahead of the irrigation season. The concerned engineer was asked to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for channel realignment and protective wall construction along vulnerable segments of the Nalla to prevent future erosion and property loss.
In parallel, the JE from the Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department was directed to restore the disrupted water supply connections at the earliest.
All departments have been instructed to submit their final assessment reports to the SDM office in Sankoo for onward submission to higher authorities. These reports will form the basis for compensation and relief to the affected individuals.
