GDC Kargil Hosts Stakeholders Consultation Programme on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development.
Kargil, July 15, 2026: Government Degree College (GDC), Kargil, successfully hosted a vital one-day stakeholder consultation programme titled “Science, Technology, and Innovation Need Identification for Sustainable Development of Kargil.” The high-profile event was jointly organized by CSIR-NIScPR, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (IIT Delhi), IIT Jammu, and Government Degree College, Kargil.
The program focused on overcoming geographical remoteness, harsh climatic constraints, and limited technology access to unlock Kargil’s regional potential. Discussions targeted key sectors including agriculture, food processing, particularly related to Heeng cultivation, capacity building, and rural livelihood enhancement.
The platform successfully brought together scientists, researchers, academicians, policymakers, government officials, entrepreneurs, farmers, SHG members, students, and community representatives to deliberate on local needs alongside national scientific experts joining virtually.
Madam Disket Angmo (Principal, GDC Kargil) delivered the welcome address. Dr. M.H. Shabani (Principal, GDC Drass) and representatives from Basij-e-Zara’at were also present, highlighting the collaborative academic and agricultural push for the region. Valuable insights were presented by Dr. Nasreen Fatima Kacho (Senior Scientist and Head, KVK Kargil), Dr. Praveen Raj (Scientist-F, CSIR-NIIST, Trivandrum) on agricultural technologies, and Dr. Tsewang Dorjey (Assistant General Manager, NABARD) and Dr Sameer Kumar sarma pachalla outreach & skill development IIT Jammu were also present.
National stakeholders from CSIR-NIScPR, IIT Delhi, IIT Jammu, CSIR-CFTRI, and ICAR Almora connected virtually to align central research capabilities with Kargil’s field-level requirements. Moving forward, the collaborative efforts aim to deploy suitable, climate-resilient technologies from CSIR laboratories directly into the field. This will directly enhance local productivity, strengthen rural livelihoods, and foster sustainable socioeconomic growth across the Union Territory of Ladakh.
