Government Degree College Khaltsi Conducts Enrollment Drive.
Under the guidance of Dr.Sameena Iqbal, principal Government Degree College (GDC) Khaltsi successfully conducted an enrollment drive in collaboration with the Village Education Committee (VEC), LBA Sham Region, and the Nambardar Goba Association, Sham Region. The programme was graced by the august presence of Madam Bhanu Prabha (IAS), Secretary, Higher Education, UT Ladakh, along with the ZEO Khaltsi Block, parents, and students from Higher Secondary School Khaltsi.
The programme commenced with a welcome address and hosting by Assistant Professor Stanzin Stamdin, who presented an overview of the college’s history, infrastructure, and courses offered. He also highlighted the introduction of the Science stream from the current academic year and discussed the challenges related to increasing student enrollment.
The President of the Nambardar Association expressed gratitude to the administration for bringing higher education to the doorstep of the region. He urged parents to spread awareness about the availability of such facilities locally and acknowledged the efforts of the Higher Education Department in upgrading five schools into model schools in the region.
The Chairman of the Village Education Committee extended his appreciation to the Secretary for her proactive role in uplifting the community through education. He also emphasized the significance of the region in the educational landscape and apprised the audience of the VEC’s role in promoting awareness.
The Vice President of the LBA Women’s Wing, in her address, highlighted the important role of women in society. She cited inspiring examples such as the college Principal, Dr. Sameena Iqbal, and Madam Bhanu Prabha (IAS), describing the latter as an efficient and committed administrator. She urged parents to take advantage of the educational opportunities available within the region.
The programme also included the felicitation of the Secretary with traditional khataks by the Principal, followed by the launch of the college’s annual newsletter titled Ser Gyi Mayon.
In her keynote address, Madam Bhanu Prabha (IAS) emphasized the substantial expenditure incurred by the government to sustain such institutions, especially in remote areas. She highlighted the region’s rich intellectual legacy of producing doctors, engineers, and professors despite limited access to higher education in the past. She expressed concern over declining enrollment and cautioned that the institution could face closure if the community does not actively support it. She urged parents to enroll their children in the local college and warned against the risks of educational migration, including financial burden and potential cultural and moral challenges.
The Secretary also interacted with faculty members and students, listening to their suggestions and concerns.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Assistant Professor Wangchuk Dorjey from the Department of Commerce, who appreciated the Secretary for her commitment to Ladakh and her active role in strengthening the education sector. He also extended gratitude to all participating stakeholders, including the VEC and community members, for their support.
