Indian Army Hosts Archery Tournament in Zanskar to Mark Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Kargil, June 28, 2025 – Commemorating Kargil Vijay Diwas, the Indian Army, in collaboration with the Zanskar Archery Association, organised an archery tournament in Zanskar today. The event celebrated the spirit of sport, tradition, and community in the remote Himalayan region.
Executive Councillor Er. Phunchok Tashi was the Chief Guest at the tournament. Other dignitaries in attendance included Col. Yogender Singh Tomar (Commander, BRTF), Col. S.P. Deepak (Commanding Officer, 306 Field Regiment), and Squadron Leader Gayatri (Retired).
Local leaders and representatives also graced the occasion, including the President of the Zanskar Buddhist Association, Paksang Lawang; the President of the Ex-Servicemen Association; and the President of the Merchant Association.
A total of 16 teams from across the district Kargil participated with enthusiasm. The top four teams advanced to the final round, showcasing skill and sportsmanship.
Cultural performances by the Skidshirak Women’s Group and the Kumik Village Women’s Group added a festive touch, reflecting the region’s rich heritage and the fusion of sport with local traditions.
Individual prizes were given; Gold to Javed Shah (Friend Club Padum) – ₹50,000, Silver to Stanzin Lundup (Ibex Salapi) – ₹3,000 and Bronze to Ghulam Khadir – ₹2,000. Horker Poyen Kargil team emerged the Champion of the tournament.
The event concluded with a speech by Executive Councillor Er. Phunchok Tashi, who expressed gratitude to the Indian Army for its enduring support to the people of Zanskar and Ladakh, particularly in fostering local talent and preserving cultural identity.
In addition to the tournament, site visits were conducted to review progress on key development projects, including inspections of the Cultural Centre at Mentsekhang and the Police Quarters.
